Here, for what it's worth (probably not much) is my annual report on the island of Kauai.Kauai, for those not so informed, is the most northerly of the inhabited islands of Hawaii, a roughly round circle of lush greenery, sometimes called The Garden Island.
Is it worth moving to Kauai, Hawaii?

I was recently offered a transfer by my company to move from the bay area, california to Kauai, hawaii and take a position there making 50k salaried a year. I've taken vacations to Kauai in the past and have always considered it my favorite island and an amazing place. Would the cost of living really be all that different from the bay area? Would it be worth it?

It really depends on your living standards. My family could live very well on your salary on Kauai, but we're very conservative. If you want a big house, and many luxuries rather than regular island life, you might have problems. Living and eating island style you would do well however; many mainlanders want a rich lifestyle. So to answer your question, it depends on your families lifestyle. Another thing to remember is that Kauai is a small community and very different from living in the Bay area. Being a tourist and a full time resident is also very different. If you go there and act more like a tourist or visitor, it will cost much more, if you assimilate and become part of the community, it can be very affordable. Keep in mind most locals don't make 50k a year. You may need to fly/float to the other islands on a regular basis to get certain supplies and foodstuff. If you are a little conservative in your living standards, you should be fine. If you are into the "finer" or "fancier" things, you may have a problem. For my family, we could live on less $ on Kauai than what it would cost in the Bay area. Worth it? Depends on what you want in life. I think the experience living on an island and learning another culture is very rewarding, even if you only do it for a year. But some people can't stand island life, so it comes down to your individual preferences.
