Episcopalians focus on needs of oil spill residents
Even though the oil well has been capped and clean-up measures are moving into a new phase, the economic and emotional impact of the April 2010 oil spill is still devastating the Gulf Coast.
Help getting fishing guide service in ?

I am 15 years old and a freshman in high school. I am a very avid fisherman and love the sport. I have alot of knowledge from catching tarpon to kings to cobia. I have been vacationing a few times a year to , Florida for my whole life and that's where my heart lives. My dream is to move there and start a fishing guide bussiness inshore type fishing, such as tarpon, kings, bonito, cobia etc. I just need some knowledge as to what to study in college or high school, what is required to start a guide service in , and anything to help my dream come true.

Thanks.

Most guides spend years (or their whole life) learning and fishing the waters in their region.

Knowing your regional waters is probably the most important aspect of guiding anywhere.

There are no high school or college classes to prepare you for guiding, (other than perhaps Business or Marine Biology).

The "must haves" of guiding in , Fla?

#1. You MUST know the waters you will be guiding, (period).

#2. You MUST have a Captains license (6 pack; OUPV).

#3. You MUST own some form of insurance, (Death & Dismemberment, Liability) You don't want to accidentally kill someone on a guided trip and not be insured.

Other than a well-designed guide boat, misc rods & tackle, an excellent business plan and a good demeanor, that is all that is "required".

Most guides have other sources of income or are retired. If you depend only on the money you make from guiding you will most certainly be VERY poor.

You need to get a reputation as a great fisherman where you want to guide. When you are old enough to work you should try to get a job at the Bass Pro Shop in , (or a BPS in your area). BPS has access to guides all over the US. Actually, it would be a good learning experience to hang-out & work around any tackle shop environment.

Hope this helps? Good luck.
