An alternative to a Newport Beach summer?

We LOVE Newport Beach/Balboa Island areas but we're not willing to pay $10,000/mo for a vacation rental.

Can you think of another area "like" NB for me to look into? I thought of Huntington but somehow it doesn't seem like I could walk everywhere there like I could in NB. We want to park our car & not get in it again until we leave!!

What is Dana Point or Laguna like? Are they comparable in atmosphere?

I live in Newport beach.La Jolla and Laguna have some pretty nice beaches.Hunington is reli nice too but a bit older then newport beach.Its still a great place to go surfing and walk around because every1s reli friendly and its jusss..awsome.
